Amalfi vs Santorini, who’s the winner for this summer holiday?

By Maria Papagiannopoulou,

There is no place that compares to the appeal of stunning Italy when it comes to weather and top summer attractions.

Have you visited its most famous areas, Positano or Amalfi, and fallen in love with its stunning coastlines and secret coves?

Let’s not overlook the glorious past, the supercars, the movie stars, and the money-filled bags.

Italy’s 4,723 km of coastline are dotted with some of the most beautiful beaches and seaside towns in the world.

It’s challenging to narrow down which coastlines along the picturesque Mediterranean Sea, where you can also do the ‘Dolce far niente’, are the most beautiful, or, to put it another way, the beauty of inaction.

The Amalfi Coast, was home to the Duchy of Amalfi, which was based in the town of Amalfi between the tenth and eleventh centuries. Up until Amalfi was taken over by the Republic of Pisa in 1137, the Principality of Salerno had been in charge of the Amalfi coast. The Amalfi Coast has earned the moniker “Divine Coast” (Divina costiera) due to its breathtaking scenery and natural beauty, which have made it one of the most sought-after vacation spots for international jet setters.

The Duchess of Malfi, a Jacobean tragedy by John Webster, focuses on the monarchs of Amalfi. In the fourth installment of his war memoirs, Mussolini: His Part in My Downfall, Spike Milligan writes about his time in Amalfi while on leave. M.C. Escher, a Dutch artist, created a series of pieces depicting the Amalfi coast.

The Amalfi Coast appeared in several scenes of Federico Fellini’s 1972 film Roma, as well as in the 2017 American superhero movie Wonder Woman, when it was portrayed as the island of Themyscira in the Amazon River.

Whether you are a travel enthusiast, a culture vulture, or a beach bum, Greece is a true summer paradise and one of the top summer vacation spots in the world.

It’s not surprising that so many people travel to Greece because of its breathtaking scenery, azure-hued waters, and enigmatic ancient sites.

The sea towns, which are built on top of high cliffs, are distinguished by their candy-colored flashes of brightness, whitewashed homes, and blue church doms.

Greece is perfect for just about everyone, whether you decide to visit the picture-perfect seaside cities or take a boat journey to remote beaches.

No Greek island, whether it be Mykonos or Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, or Corfu, will let you down.

For instance, in one of the above mentioned, the name Santorini, which is a contraction of the name Santa Irini, was given to the island by the Latin Empire in the thirteenth century. It is a reference to Saint Irene and comes from the name of the old cathedral in the village of Perissa. Before then, it was known as Kallístē (Καλλίστη, “the most beautiful one”), Strongýlē (Στρoγγύλη, “the circular one”), or Thēra. The name Thera was revived in the nineteenth century as the official name of the island and its main city, but the colloquial name Santorini is still in popular use.

The Minoan eruption, also known as the Thera eruption, which took place on the island approximately 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization, was one of the greatest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. A sizable caldera surrounded by deposits of volcanic ash hundreds of meters deep was left behind by the eruption.

Despite the fact that much of what is left of it now is a caldera filled with water, it is the most active volcanic center in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. The volcanic arc measures 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) in length and 300 mi in width.

In general, summer vacations provide an opportunity for children to catch up on schoolwork, visit new places and spend time with family members. Children can also improve their skills by taking tutoring classes during the summer break. Summer break is the time for those high school students to start being independent and learn a new set of skills. For high school student’s summer break is when they will make the most money to save for a new car, go to the movies with friends, or just about anything they want. No matter which islands you choose to visit, a good company and a glass of wine is always the answer!
