World Governments: For the Glory or Failure of all humankind? Part II

By Panagiotis Moysoglou,

Here we are back again, days before the new year to talk about the governance of the World and the future of humankind. For long gone are the fictional or real-world contemporaries of world governments. It is time to break down this unknown puzzle to it’s very basic and simple tiles. Join me on this last journey of this world international governance idea where I can try to analyze the hurdles of good and bad and the conflicting opinions on an Earth spanning World Government. This last leg of our journey will be made of the pros and cons of the existence of a World government and the realistic struggles and criticism its creation might have to face.
The appearance of an international world governance will surlily streamline procedures and break down barriers that stop humankind from investing in such programs. One of the first pillars will be shared information for research or security without fear of conflicting politics and archaic social problems like racism. For this institution will bear the name of all humankind with the hope that a complete destruction of social, economic, political and gender inequalities. In this light, as it is seen when nations come together, there will be a surge in economic growth, complete access to education and law and order can be achieved under this World Earth Model. Lastly there might be a great chance or hope that without the national or ethic dividers as we know them today the horrific atrocities and wars made by us humans will be a things of memories past. A world spanning power with its own judicial, executive and constitutional institutions will be able to affectively deal with either disorder or infractions that might threaten the Greater good of humanity and the human rights of all its citizens.

What if thought all this growth, safety and prosperity is all theoretical and impractical when the human factors become a part of this equation of ours? What if our world becomes like the tyrannical order of the Star Wars Galactic Empire and not the Federation of the Start Trek Universe. In our own lifetimes and those that have come before us we have seen national governments fail the test of integrity, meritocracy, anticorruption, and competence. Numerous are the stories of whole countries being paralyzed with incompetent or inactive rulers or parliaments. Of course, the dangers multiply into formidable numbers when all of these factors are brough into a world government. A myriad of tight balancing of powers and checks will have to be in place to
make sure this innovative idea will not fall into incompetence. It will be a tremendous undertaking to strike this balance just right for it could take just a single night for all to come crashing down in the name of the power and glory of one person.
This World Government will have to be something new and innovative while at the same time be an organization and a government which is the best Earth has seen since the beginning of human civilization. There are countless answers and questions which await their realistic implementation and solutions respectively. A few examples can include the type of government it will and will it lean towards centralized or decentralized power dynamic. Another factor to consider is how an organization that is tasked with the effective governance of the billions of peoples in our world will deal with the national and ethic walls that plague our cotemporally world. It will have to deal with very strict or impossible representation laws and regulations which at times might temper its effectiveness and cause it to be obsolete. Let us not forget though of the other aspects of this governing institution. For this governing body might be broken down into the three separations of power under the teachings of Joch Lock in the name of world peace and order yet it might not be implemented right either by design or by malice. Even if all those walls are broken down, the daily governance of such an institution would be a herculin task in and of itself. Let us all imagine for a single moment that a world government, this bastion of humanities will and cooperation, might be able to work and let us ask ourselves why that has not happened as of now. An answer can either be as complex as the discussed topics or as simple as life itself. A thought can be that the notion, the idea of international cooperation and governance has entered our mind only recently. Some of the nations and ethnic groups of our world areas till facing daily struggles when it comes to security, identity, and purpose.

As such, it will be difficult for a lot of our contemporaries to imagine such an idea of an international government, for they already have more pressing matters of their own. Other matters including economic influence, regional and world powers upset with the change in leadership are also some of the reasons that hold back such an endeavor from taking its first steps. Lastly it will only be right to end this article without reserving a bit of ‘space’ for the United Nations. As it was pointed out on the last article the UN as an organization whose similarities to an International Government are growing by the decade. For it possesses some of the qualities and flaws of this ‘World Government’ idea and that includes international spanning organizations and institutions with the good will of humankind at heart. Although as it was pointed out the UN has some severe drawbacks mostly centered around the dependance of the Organization to its most powerful member states, a lack of some meaningful executive power and waning influence in the past few years. Yet it remains the only bastion of humankind in the sea of personal and national influence and chaos. In the words of the great Dag Hammarskjöld ‘It has been said that the United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell” . As such it is the best candidate to help humans take the next big leap forward, even with the serious faults the UN holds.
Humanity has always persevered and moved on to greater heights every century. Although especially if we remember the difficulty of the Human mind when it comes to change, any prosperity and improvement comes with a few setbacks, some delays and a lot of outcries. Yet it happens. The same can be said for the World Government Idea. It has been though of in science fiction and maybe has already appeared in the face of the UN. A international world government will appear in the pages of human history, maybe even in out own life times. All it will take will be a simple change from the word ‘I’ to ‘us’ and from the word ‘me’ to the most important word of all ..’Humankind’ .Then and only then will the pages of out history start turning again.
