A look on the arcs of “Hunter × Hunter” (1999-2001; 2011-2014) [Part II]

By Dimitris Topalis,

In the first part of the Hunter × Hunter, we mentioned the first three arcs of the anime: the Hunter Exam Arc, the Heavens Arc, and the Phantom Troupe Arc. This time, we are talking about the remaining three, which are equally interesting to the previous ones, but the fights are more immense and spectacular than everything we have seen so far. Let us move on with the first arc: the Greed Island Arc.

The Greed Island Arc

Kurapika and Leorio leave, so the focus of the arc is again aimed at the duo of Gon and Killua. They finally have a lead on Gon’s father, Ging, regarding a game that Ging and his friends created called “Greed Island”. Gon and Killua, while they were at Gon’s house, found a memory card of the game, but they did not know how to play it. They luckily find a billionaire that wants to send a team of people to beat the game. At first, they are a tad hesitant, but after Gon and Killua train and Killua forges his Nen technique, they are confident enough to enter the game in order to find out about the game’s rules and how they can actually die in this game. They encounter a 12-year-old girl named Bisky, who is actually hiding her real self and is using her Nen use.

Bisky later reveals that her name is Biscuit Krueger and that she actually is 56 years old. Once she reveals her true identity, she decides to train Gon and Killua incredibly hard so that they can be even better at using Nen. At first, they are hesitant, but Bisky reveals she is the one that actually trained their mentor, Wing. They have almost completed Greed Island, but they need to beat Razor, a friend of Ging’s, to gain a much-needed card. They need help and notice that a player named Chrollo has entered the game. After teleporting to Chrollo’s location, Gon and Killua find out that Hisoka has entered as Chrollo. In reality, Hisoka tries to find a person who can lift Kurapika’s ability off Chrollo, so that he will be able to fight him.

Hisoka agrees to help them along with another player and the billionaire’s bodyguards. They manage to defeat him, with Gon using a lot of strength and showing his potential as a Nen user, as Razor reveals how he and the other members along with Ging created the game and how Ging saved him. They manage to defeat the villain Genthru, former leader of the Bomber group, and they beat the game. Once the game was over, Gon and Killua transported to the other friends of Ging’s, who reveal facts about Ging and the game, how it is in the real world in an unknown location, and how Razor’s Nen keeps the game running. Then Gon and Killua make it to the entrance of the game, and he asks the girl that greets the players to transport them to Ging’s location. Instead of Ging’s location, she transports them to a friend of his, Kite, a former student of his. Ging had told the girl that, if Gon asks to be transported alone, he would meet him, but if he brought a friend then, she would transport them to Kite.

The Chimera Arc

After Gon and Killua meet Kite, he tells them stories about him and Ging and asks them to assist him in investigating an area, because strange creatures appear. They accept and end up in the area of NGL, where the people have decided to abandon the technology and live a simpler life. The “leader” of the place is named Gyro. Then we take a look at what is causing this disturbance. It is a Chimera Ant (also known as “Gourmet Ants”) called the “Queen” that devours people and then births Chimera Ants. The Chimera Ants have animal characteristics, but they can talk like humans, and then at some point, they can unlock the memories from those they have devoured.

The Queen tries to make a society of Chimera Ants, before giving birth to their king to rule. Kite lets Gon and Killua fight the Chimera Ants as they need the experience, but in a fight, a Chimera Ant who took a Nen punch escaped and learned to awaken Nen. They started to learn Nen, so they could excel in fighting. One day, a royal guard names Neferpitou was born, a cat-type Chimera Ant who tortured a Hunter, in order to gain intel regarding Nen. Then Pitou attacks the group and kills Kite as Gon and Killua escape, finding in their way Isaac Netero and two Hunters, who were approaching the site. Netero said they were going to take the Chimera Ants down and if Gon and Killua wanted to participate, they would have to become stronger.

So, the two train with Bisky and fight the two apprentices of one of the Hunters that they encountered with Netero and is a friend of his, Morel Mackernasey. The Chimera Ant King is born and with his Nen, he is the strongest being in the universe. Accompanied by his royal guard, he settles in a palace and challenges people to fight him in games; the result of which was that the losers would get devoured, as it happened. One of them, a blind girl named Komugi, would beat the King in a game every single time. The King is amazed by this human and lets her life. After their training, Gon, Killua, and the rest of the group decide to attack the castle. Then they look to the sky and see a dragonfly, whose ability belongs to Killua’s grandfather, Zeno Zoldyck, according to Killua. Zeno and Netero attack the castle, and Netero easily overpowers Pitou, sending Pitou very far away. The plan is that Gon and the group will keep the royal guard away, while Netero will fight the King. The castle roof collapses and Komugi gets hurt. After this incident, the King decides to fight Netero far from the castle and tells Pitou to heal Komugi.

Gon enters as a different person and sees Pitou and Komugi. He does not care that Pitou is trying to heal Komugi — he wants to kill her for what she did to Kite. His aura becomes black and dark. After Pitou healed Komugi, they try to fight Gon, who goes on a rage and makes a deadly vow to use all of his Nen, without caring what will happen to him. In the other fight, Netero shows why he was the best Nen user and the strongest Hunter, who could injure the King, but not kill him. However, Netero loses his leg and one arm from an attack on the King. Then Netero stops his heart and reveals he will see Meruem in Hell, as he nukes the Chimera Ants’ King.

13th Hunter Chairman election Arc

Gon is in a hospital and about to die from the effects of his vow. Netero left a video to the other Hunters, stating that he had left the organization before he fought the King so that they will not be charged about the aftermath of his fight with the King. He tells them to elect a new Chairman from the Zodiac Hunters. Ging is among them, and we take a first look at him. He is a strong, smart Hunter, as it is implied that he may be the strongest Hunter. Ging and Cheadle Yorkshire try not to let Pariston Hill, the Rat Hunter, get elected. On the voting day, Leorio shows up and takes a microphone, telling Ging why he had not visited Gon yet. Ging upsets Leorio, who then punches Pariston, who punched Ging afterward, resulting in the other Hunters supporting Ging as Chairman.

Leorio states that, if he wins the election, he will dedicate whatever is necessary to heal Gon. Killua, after a fight with his family, escapes with his sister, Alluka Zoldyck, who shares her body with a supernatural being, that originates from the dark continent called “Nanika”. She heals Gon but cannot restore his Nen. Gon wakes up and goes to see Leorio, who hugs him in tears. The election ends with Paristan being elected as Chairman, but quits, making Cheadle the Hunter Chairman. After becoming the new Hunter Chairman, he states that he wanted to mess with Netero one last time. Ging tells Gon that Kite is alive and that he and Gon will meet after he visits him. After Gon and Killua say their goodbyes, Gon goes to find Ging. The most heart-warming moment happens, as Ging and Gon finally, get the chance to talk like father and son.
