15 movies that will be released in 2023

By Socratis Santik Oglou,

The 2023 schedule often includes some of the year’s top movies in the first quarter before Oscar season, as well as more blockbusters, popular superhero movies, the return of Indiana Jones, and fresh work from some of the film community’s most beloved directors. The 23 important movies that we anticipate to be released this year are listed below. We do not know for sure whether films by directors like Michael Mann, Terrence Malick, Jonathan Glazer, and Sofia Coppola will be available in ’23, so they are not included. It should be emphasized that we begin with the movies whose release dates are certain.

The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan

The popular book by Alexandre Dumas serves as the star of a pricey French production that revives the swashbuckler movie subgenre in today’s cinema. Vicki Cripps plays Queen Anne of Austria in addition to Vincent Cassel, Milaidi, and Eva Green who are all excellent actresses. The movie will be completed in two parts with the second one having a US release at the end of 2023 or the start of the next year. It is estimated to be released in France on April 5.

Βarbie

The most talked–about socialist production of 2023 was a project that had long been rumored in business circles. We were won over by the 2001 parody trailer and reports suggest that Greta Gerwig has created an Enchanted-style story in which Barbie is transferred to the real world and establishes references to Jacques Demy and the famous musical. If only the outcome were as enjoyable as it appears to be. The movie will be released in the United Arab Emirates on July 20.

Τhe Exorcist

A new trilogy by David Gordon Green, like the one he attempted with Halloween, has begun, marking the fifty years since the release of William Friedkin’s enduring horror movie. We hope that the new version preserves the original’s film sensibility. Given that human drama served as the foundation for The Exorcist, perhaps this franchise will link more harmoniously with its independent past. Unknown whether Linda Blair would also appear in a chapter, Ellen Burstyn makes a comeback to assist the family being put to the test by Pazuzu’s malevolent intentions. Its release date is set on October 13 — and yes, it will be Friday, making it an even better excuse to watch the movie!

Dune: Part II

It would be a shame not to see the follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s books on the big screen given that the undeniably compelling first Dune was only a protracted prequel. Zendaya is upgraded to the lead role, Christopher Walken joins a select cast, and sci-fi aficionados are counting down the hours until November 3.

Wonka

In addition to the second installment of Dune, Timothée Chalamet will be celebrated in 2023 for his performance as eccentric chocolatier Willie Wonka, a role first written by Roald Dahl and later portrayed by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. It is an original narrative that chronicles the construction of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory; it will, of course, contain musical numbers and dance sequences; and it is rumored to have performed exceedingly well in its test screenings. We most likely discovered the cinematic Christmas extravaganza of ’23 with Paul King, the director of the two adorable calligraphed “Paddingtons”. The movie will be released in Ireland’s theatres on December 15.

Astérix & Obélix: The Middle Kingdom

The short-haired four-year-old Gaul is played by Guillaume Canet who promises an adaptation more like Operation: Cleopatra, the only live-action adaptation of the comic that managed to capture some of the anarchist spirits of the author. Zlatan Ibrahimović plays a minor role while Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel play Cleopatra and Julius Caesar respectively. The character Obélix, played here by Gilles Lellouche, a close friend and frequent working partner of the director, is the one we will miss the most: Depardieu. France’s theatres will premiere on February 1.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

After “Doctor Strange,” the most intriguing MCU sub-franchise is currently scripting its conclusion with James Gunn joining the rival DC team. Unlike the previous movie’s climax which had Michael Rooker’s character saying goodbye, here Gunn appears to be attempting tear gas as the trailer from a while back hints. Let us let Stallone’s fans know that he will try out once again. May 5 will be the date the movie will premiere in the US.

The Flash

While on paper he had the calendar lead, the second was late in the multiverse dance due to constant procrastination, the protagonist’s legal misadventures, and the change in leadership at Warner and DC. The nostalgic draw, according to speculations that the movie has thrilled in test show, will be Michael Keaton’s comeback three decades after the comic pinnacle of Batman Returns, while fans of the so-called SnyderVerse here will likely bid farewell to certain familiar figures for good. The Flash will be available in the theatres on June 16.

Knock at the Cabin

The Apocalypse will start unless a family member is sacrificed according to a small group of individuals who visit two men and their daughter at a cabin in the woods for the weekend. Despite the fact that M. Night Shyamalan has established himself as a master of the room thriller, he has already committed to two films in succession that are based on intolerable conspiracies and his innate talent could not save them. We hope he does not minimize evil in this instance and instead reverts to the kind of humanistic, beneficent movie that had won us over. Set a reminder to your calendars on February 3 for the movie’s premiere!

The Killer

David Fincher follows up Mank with another film he battled to finish for years, this time with Netflix’s assistance. This movie is based on a graphic novel of the same name that aims to raise the consciousness of a professional performer. Working with Andrew Kevin Walker of Seven once more on the script, Michael Fassbender in the major parts, and much expectation to see how Fincher will adapt the material for our times — a pattern that permeates his entire body of work — are all factors in this project. There is not an exact date yet, so keep yourself updated!

Poor Things

A second movie, named AND, starring Emma Stone, was squeaked into Yorgos Lanthimos’s schedule while filming his take on the Frankenstein legend which has been in production since last year but is currently experiencing post-production delays. Although there is a good potential that we will see both movies this year, we are going to start with the one that comes before it in chronological order. Mark Ruffalo, Margaret Qualey, and Willem Dafoe round out the cast and Tony McNamara of The Favourite rewrote the writing. The movie is reportedly slated to debut in December.

Κillers of the Flower Moon

Although Scorsese and Schumacher typically take their time in the editing suite, we had hoped to watch the movie in 2022. Someone sarcastic would claim that the two primary characters of his cinema, De Niro and DiCaprio, first came together in Gangs of New York for the second time in the New York filmmaker’s neo-western, but we adore Day Lewis too much to agree with him entirely. Given that it is an Apple TV+ production, we are unsure if we will be able to attend the premiere in Cannes on a big screen.

Οppenheimer

It was left to Christopher Nolan to fight for the survival of the (most cerebral and idiosyncratic) creator cinema at the level of blockbuster after David Fincher turned to Netflix for more special projects, Steven Spielberg made his most “small” (not in an artistic sense) and personal film yet, and James Cameron stuck to the “safe” paths of the franchise he made — let us give him credit for that. The most daring gamble of his career at the box office is Oppenheimer, an ostensibly unique biography of the man who created the atomic bomb. The viewers will be able to watch the movie on July 21.

Asteroid City

There is a significant likelihood that Wes Anderson’s second movie, the modular The amazing story of Henry Sugar, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s short stories, will be released in 2023 in addition to Lanthimos. However, his romance film Asteroid City, which is rumored to have had the largest budget he’s ever managed, is the one we will undoubtedly see. The movie, which also stars the usual suspects of its genre, is based in a fictional 1950s American city and stars Tom Hanks, Margo Robbie, and Scarlett Johansson. Every year, families get together for an astronomical festival in this city. June 16 is the movie’s premiere.

Elemental

Last but definitely not least, Pixar returns to original inventions after the creative low point of Lightyear, this time anthropomorphizing the natural elements that dwell in a multicultural or more accurately multi-elemental megalopolis. The emotional chemistry between the two lead characters in the clip suggests romance; the only doubt is Peter Shaun’s involvement, whose Kalosaurus, while great, was undoubtedly one of the company’s worse efforts. The movie will be available for watching on June 16.
