What should I watch next?

By Marilena Kagkaraki,

It has been that kind of a year when watching a movie might seem like a great option to spend your night and it is! So, if you are wondering “What should I watch next?”, here are 5 movie suggestions that you may want to consider depending on what kind of movies you like. Thus, after reading this article hop on to Netflix and start binging, making it a movie night.

La La Land (2016)

Damien Chazelle’s critically acclaimed musical with a dominant presence at the 2017 Oscars definitely makes the cut on our list. In a classic, nostalgic and romantic Hollywood atmosphere, we watch a love story unfold. The story takes place in a retro and ambient Los Angeles, in an unknown year. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a struggling jazz piano player and Mia (Emma Stone), a struggling actress, fall in love while trying to make their dreams come true. The chemistry and good performance of the actors add a great deal to the storyline. The love story is really in the background as the main question that one has while watching La La Land is about dreams, hopes and sacrifices in order to do what you love. On a side note, the movie is also a fresh look on musicals, with musical songs indeed accompanying it and not being the basic element of it. If you like realistic and “feel good” movies, but with a bit of romanticism in them, this is definitely a must-watch.

The King (2019)

This is a Netflix original movie directed by David Michôd placed in the medieval times of English monarchies. The movie depicts the story of Hal (Timothée Chalamet), a prince who is crowned as King Henry V, after his father’s passing. The king explores his own limits when it comes to ruling, love, politics and amidst all that, a dispute with the King of France (Robert Pattinson). Apart from the historical background, the movie is really an insight to monarchy and leadership, while the action scenes are complementary to the main story of the king. If you are into historical, but also political and action movies, I definitely recommend it.

Mary Queen of Scotts (2018)

When you have the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominees Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as leading actresses, a movie is really worthy to be watched. The director Josie Rourke recreated a movie about the life of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, and her attempts to establish her ruling there. However, the film is also exploring the relationships between Scotland and England as well as between Mary and her cousin, Elizabeth I, the Queen of England. It is at its most parts an historical -almost autobiographical- movie about Mary Stuart based on the book “Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart” by Dr. John Guy of the life of the queen.  The movie has impeccably created the atmosphere of the time and the sceneries explored within are breathtaking.

All the bright places (2020)

When Violet (Elle Fanning) meets Finch (Justice Smith) she is at her lowest point in her life. Together they set on an adventure to find all the bright and unique places, even in a town as dull as theirs. While they are on that journey, they explore life, relationships, past traumas and emotional scars, but also rediscover the beauty in the simple things. This is a drama romance and only watch it if you are prepared to get invested and emotional with the characters.

Enola Holmes (2020)

A different yet again mysterious side to a Sherlock Holmes story is what you should expect when pressing start to see the movie. This one explores the story of Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) -sister to Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill)- and Mycroft (Sam Claflin). It is a coming-of-age story about the younger sister of the beloved detective, heading on a journey, trying to find clues to her mother’s sudden disappearance. She embarks on it only to start finding more about herself, her past, mother and her brothers, while also navigating young love. It is a mystery with a touch of innocence and young essence and something to watch if you want to have a relaxing, nice evening.

If you find anything interesting, head over to Netflix and chill!
